GrutBrushes Cloud FX are not stencil stamp brushes. These Photoshop cloud brushes are dynamic and responsive. No two brush strokes will ever be alike. The brushes respond to the individual pressure of each of your strokes of the stylus.

Turn your stylus into a spray can full of fluffy clouds. Pick one of the crispy Photoshop  cloud brushes, press lightly for a slight whisp or choose a blobby cummulus cloud brush and push harder to blanket your photo in delicious thick realistic clouds. You can see I got carried away here but take my advice and rather take it easy, the secret to realistic clouds is subtlety.  I’m going all out a bit to show off these brushes but a light touch goes a long way in creating realistic skies.

With a bit of practice, a subtler hand than I’ve shown here and a judicious use of the undo button you can get some pretty realistic photorealistic clouds.

If you pre-ordered the Cloud Brushes you can download them now on your account page.

Photoshop Cloud Brushes in the GrutBrushes Plugin Panel for Photoshop CC.  You can also use them in the standard Photoshop Tool Presets Panel without the plugin.

Use the different brushes to make up beautiful skies by combining all the elements that go into a realistic sky full of clouds just the way you want them. Use the “Cotton Cloud” brush for a fluffy cummulus cloud and add crispy whisps around the edges with the “Kelp Cloud” brush. Create jet streak contrails with the “Jets” brush or carve away at your clouds with any one of the 10 “Cloudless” eraser brushes that have the same natural textures as the cloud brushes themselves.

    The Cloud FX set includes:

30 Dynamic cloud brushes which have no defined texture, meaning they will never repeat or even show a visible tile seem as they have no static texture. You can draw over the same spot multiple times with a dynamic brush and never get the same pattern.

Also included are the 10 static ‘Gumbo’ Cloud brushes which do contain a texture but provide certain fill textures to enhance the structure of your clouds. Use these brushes to fill in subtler web-like textures where the dynamic brushes may be too overbearing or lack a defined structure.

The remaining 10 brushes are the eraser brushes which you can use to carve away at your cloud layers to shape the clouds to exactly and precisely the way you want them to look.

2 of the dynamic brushes Aerodust and Aerogig allow you to shape the cloud particles by moving your Stylus around. As long as you don’t lift your stylus, you can shift and push the particles around like sand on a chalkboard. Once you lift your hand from the tablet, the cloud particles are ‘set’ in place.

    Cloud Painting tips and Tricks

Always start on a new layer

This way you can have complete control over what the clouds look like and reduce the layer opacity to blend them into the image more. Cloud eraser brushes will not work on a flattened background layer

A light touch goes further than a heavy hand

Using a light touch with your stylus will not only give you a ton of flexibility and control over your clouds, it will also produce much more realistic clouds. It’s much better to paint multiple layers of clouds on top of each other than to press hard and create thick overbearing clouds. Subtlety is key and remember what you’re creating after all: clouds are made of water vapour with air in between so give them a lot of air and space to breathe.

    Use Layering to Create Texture

When you apply multiple layers of cloud on top of each other, where they overlap can create beautiful rich organic textures, the more layering the more natural it will look. Remember that when you look at clouds you are seeing through multiple layers of water droplets, they way they overlap is what makes the shape.

    Erase frequently

Undo to redo. As the clouds are unpredictable, get into the habit of drawing with your fingers on the undo keys, this way you can stroke on a cloud quickly, undo and redo until you like the cloud you’ve put on your canvas

Use any of the Cloud Brushes as erasers

change brush mode from Normal to clear to turn the Photoshop brush into an eraser

‘clear’ turns a Photoshop cloud brush into an eraser

Change the mode from Normal to Clear to instantly and temporarily turn any of the Photoshop cloud brushes into an eraser.

Use the cloud brushes for Smoke, steam and other Atmospheric Effects

    Pick from your on-screen palette

Clouds are rarely white in the real world, they are made up of reflected light from their environment. Use option/alt to click and pick your colours from your image, especially when working on a photo. Pick new tones frequently to vary your hues while keeping it integrated with it’s environment.

Quick Tutorials, Tips and Tricks for using the Splatter Brushes in Photoshop

    (Tap/Hover images to see video)

    Pow (Splatter brush)

    • More Pressure results in a larger splatter
    • Keep the stylus pressed and glide to ‘grow’ the splatter spot you’re on
    • Use the “Zap” Photoshop splatter brush for sharper edged splashes

Finger linger and Palm Linger (Mixer brushes)

    • Click on white and drag into the black for a white fingerprint
    • Start in the black and drag out of the ink spill for a dark fingerprint
    • Painting over the area back and forth will smudge and blur the fingerprint
    • Note: These are mixer brushes and the name begins with “MI” instead of “FX”

Ink Drips that Splatter (Hi Splat, Splatex, Rinse Drip)

    • These three brushes simulate ink drops landing from high up
    • Hi Splatex has more texture than Hi Splat (which is opaque)
    • Rinse Drip is the most diluted and has most paper texture
    • Push harder for larger drops and wider droplet distribution

Wet Splattery Ink Stains – “Romato”

    • This brush gives splattery wet stains like popped ink bubbles
    • Hold and move stylus to smudge or remove darker viscous ink bits
    • Use irregular patterns for more realistic stains
    • Press lightly for faint weblike ink stains

    Ink Spray Brush – “Sprinkler”

    • Good for adding spray to edges
    • Press down and drag in the direction you want to spray ink

Wed Egded Ink Stain Painter – “Slop Stain” Photoshop Brush

    • Push Stylus harder for thicker stain
    • Stop and Release to leave wet edge
    • Keep stylus pressed (don’t lift) and paint over to remove wet edging
    • Push lightly for faded “wiped up” ink stain

    Drippy Ono (Drip Splatter brush)

    • Some brushes Like this one are ‘live’ and you can ‘sculpt’ the splatter until you lift your stylus
    • Press with medium pressure and move around to add or remove spray and splatter
    • Lift the stylus and the ink ‘dries’
    • Black stains will build up eventually, so undo and start again if you don’t like the pattern

Trail and Spill in one Brush (Croco Nile brush)

    • Press lightly for an ink trail
    • Press the stylus harder to flood the area with a spill
    • Draw in circles on the spot to expand the splatter

Giant Explosive Spray (Squid Rocket brush)

    • Largest of all the splatter brushes
    • Spray Splatters radially from center of cursor
    • Highly explosive ink spray!

Soppin Seap (Water Stain Photoshop brush)

    • Brush lightly for water stain damage
    • Focus on one spot and paint in circles for darker, wet, ink stains
    • Press harder on stylus for more defined edges

“Classic” Ink Splatters (Sprung Spray Photoshop brush)

    • Use Sprung Spray for ‘classic’ ink splatter drops
    • Has built in fluctuations in ink dilution for added realism

    Drip trail and streak brushes

    • Brushes named ‘Trickle’ produce drip trails and streaks
    • Useful between splotches and to lead from one to the next

    Mold (“Moldy Cask” Photoshop Brush)

    • Brush lighly for mold spores
    • Keep stylus pressed and double back to paint a full black mold outbreak

Gritty Spills (“Tropical Slop” Photoshop Brush)

    • Thick and Wet Spills with Gritty Sediment

Jigs Awe (Photoshop ink Spatter brush)

    • This Brush creates random edged splatters.
    • Brush lightly to cover large area with ink specks
    • Good for controlled build up
    • Semi-opaque ink with lots of organic texture

Drop Disco/Fin/Hal (Photoshop ink Drop brushes)

    • Start by drawing a small puddle.
    • Tap off to the left of the puddle to add specular highlights
    • There must be lighter colour behind the (transparent) shiny bits
    • Tap/press stylus harder for larger drops
    • When using other colours, keep them dark for best results

Done Sprung (Ink Splats and trails)

    • Drag stylus with light pressure for a trail
    • Press and wiggle stylus in place for a splotch
    • Use firm pressure to get wider splash
    • Download this one for FREE when signed in

Quick Start Tutorial – How to use the Photoshop splatter brushes

To get the most out of these brushes you will want to use them with a graphics tablet (though they do work without one!)

The brushes are Tool Presets (TPL files) and require Photoshop CS 5 or higher to work.

The 7 Mixer brushes may not work with anything less than Photoshop CC (though I am not sure about this)

If you want to use them with the GrutBrushes Plugin you will need Photoshop CC 2014 or 2015

Q: How many brushes are there?
    A: 100! (93 Paint brushes and 7 mixer brushes)

    Q: I pre-ordered these, where do I download them?
A: You will find the download link on your account page. It looks something like this:
