Impasto Painting in Photoshop – Quick Tips 01
Here are a few quick tips to get you going with the Photoshop Impasto brushes
I will be doing a series of tutorials on how to use the GrutBrushes Photoshop Impasto brushes but this short video above shows a few brief tips.
To summarise:
– Vary your stylus pressure and use short strokes for a more organic look
– Use a flatter Photoshop brush to block in large areas
– Press softly on your stylus to blend or soften texture
– Push harder when you want more texture
– Use alt/option to pick colours from your painting

Manual Plugin Installation instructions are here!
If you are having trouble installing the plugin and even though you get an ‘installation ok’ pop up you don’t see it under windows>extensions when you restart Photoshop it could be that due to permissions restrictions your computer is stopping the installer from copying the necessary files onto your computer. Manual installation seems to be the way to go. It basically involves copying two directories from the zip file onto your computer You can find detailed instructions for both Mac and Windows here Use at your own risk!
So far I only have two reports from users but both tell me that the manual installation worked for them. Leave a comment below if you tried it.
February 4th 2016
Work began today on a plugin update! this will not be major but will include a few requested features including:
- Last picked brush indicator
A way to tell which was the last brush you picked!
2. Brush re-loader
When you update Photoshop to the latest version it currently deletes all records of which GrutBrushes you have installed. This will check to see which brushes you had installed and reload them automatically into the GrutBrushes Panel
3. OK to ALL
No longer will you have to repeatedly hit OK to overwrite every brush when you reload them, you will be able to click on an ‘ok to all’ button.
4. TPL filter on Mac
When you choose to ‘ADD’ brushes from your hard drive on a MAC, you will be able to select only the TPL files and not the PNG files by accident (They are hidden by default on a PC)
There will be another tweak or two but those are the main changes you will notice.
I will send out an email and put an announcemnt here on this post when the new version is ready to download from the shop or from your account page
January 28 2016 – Plugin Update in the works
I am getting some reports that the plugin is not installing for some people on the latest version of Photoshop (2015.1.2) I am talking to the developer now to work on a fix but I need to know what version of the plugin is working or not working and for which OS. I really don’t know how many people are using the plugin or how many people are not able to.
I would be so very appreciative If you can let me know in the comments below or in an email whether it is working for you or not and which version OS and which version of Photoshop then I can get a good idea of what needs work.

Free Photoshop Brush of the Week #45
This week’s free Photoshop brush of the week (#45) is ‘Stump Trough‘ an oil impasto brush. This is a bonus brush from Impastos 01 the new set of 10 Photoshop impasto oil brushes. But try this one first to see if you want the rest which are all available to Art Brushes Complete members to download right now (from the brush shop, the portal page, or from your account page) It’s available to download for free through Sunday.
This is all native Photoshop by the way, all the oil paint texture comes from the brush itself, there are no layer effects or post processing of any kind.
Here’s a Photoshop painting that uses about 8 of the impasto brushes (this also has no layer effects or filters)
These are actual brush strokes of the 10 brushes in Impastos 01:
Want more? Impastos 01 Photoshop Brush Set
10 Photoshop Impasto oil brushes for digital artists. Realistic pressure responsive Photoshop oil paint brushes that simulate the look of traditional oils without the use of layer effects or any post processing.
Photoshop Impasto Brushes 01 Set selection complete
Photoshop Impastos 01 is almost here. I chose the final brush tonight (Lalo Salsa) so that makes 10 brushes selected for the first oil Impastos collection, available this weekend. It’s been a long time coming so thanks for your patience but I wanted to wait until there was a nice selection of brushes that represented a good balance of weights, blends and textures. I think this first set will cover most digital oil painters’ needs from blended backgrounds to the deep, sharp troughs of a loaded camel hair brush. Many of these have been available in the brush shop as singles for a while already and those of you who are Members will already have many of these as well as a few other Impastos that are extra additions not even covered by this collection. Just another benefit of being a member: first access to new brushes before there’s even a notion of them being a part of a set.
This will be the first set of its kind anywhere that I am aware of. Keep in mind that these impasto brushes have depth and texture built into them, there are no layer effects or any post processing applied to the brush strokes you see here. I’ve even restrained myself from applying any canvas layer overlays in order to show you the pure unadultarated brush strokes. If you haven’t tried any of my Photoshop impasto brushes yet you will get a chance to on Monday as next week’s free Photoshop brush of the week will be an oil impasto, and it will likely be a brand new one not even seen here. There’s one I’m working on that’s along the same lines as Imp Giganto that I’m keen to share next week.
