Here are a few scribbles with the Fray Ray brush, a new ink brush I’m working on. It has a nice fine point taper but when you press hard it has jagged frayed edges. One of this brush’s features is that it has a varying translucency to it, as if the ink is not 100% opaque, or the brush may be loaded with a bit too much water. Drag the stylus a bit slower and you will get that dark full opacity but sketch quickly and you see those nice patches of translucency that suggest some excitement in your sketches, evidence of a frenzied wrist.

Free GrutBrush of the Week #19 – “Dusky Covet” Ink Brush
“why so many painting brushes? What about something for sketching?” Well, I’ve heard you Jann and others who’ve kindly sent me some lovely feedback. This week’s brush is for you who like nothing better than to draw sketch and doodle. Dusky Covet is a thin ink brush with a light start for sketching but deposits a lot of oily ink with some firmer pressure. The ink is viscous and wont ‘dry’ until you lift your stylus so you can shape it and mush it around a bit if you care to.
As always, you can download it from the shop or the member’s free Photoshop brush page for free until the end of this week (July 27th) when there will be a new free brush.
*Requires Photoshop cs5.5 or higher and a pressure sensitive graphics tablet. Free registration required to download.
New Charcoal brush “Ramp Braiser”
Following close on the heels of this week’s debut of the ‘Moss Potter’ charcoal brush, I’ve added a new charcoal brush to the brush shop. Ramp Braiser is a stark textured natural media brush with distinct spore pattern. Soft repeated strokes will render fuzzy shading while harder broad strokes leave a large-grained rough charcoal texture.
Free Photoshop Brush of the Week #18 – “Moss Potter” Charcoal Brush
This week’s free GrutBrush is a versatile charcoal brush with a wide tonal range. With a medium firm stroke this brush will give you a mid tone of about fifty percent coverage, press harder or double back on your stroke and you can fairly quickly get to an opaque full cover. Brush lightly to use it as a tonal sketching charcoal.
As always, you can download it from the shop or the member’s free Photoshop brush page for free until the end of this week (July 20th) when there will be a new free brush.

When Photoshop’s Eraser is too soft…
Sometimes Photoshop’s eraser is just too soft, even with hardness set at 100% The GrutBrushes Sharp Eraser gives you a crisper alternative. At it’s maximum edge hardness, the default Photoshop eraser still leaves quite a soft feathered edge. If you zoom in really closely you will see that it has up to 3 pixels of feathering, that means that from opaque to transparent there is a smooth gradient of 3 pixels. That may not seem like much but it really does make a difference and has the overall effect of creating a soft smudgy fade around anything you erase. Without any feathering at all, your erased lines could appear too sharp, like pixel art. With the GrutBrushes Sharp Eraser, that gradient edge transition from opaque to transparent is reduced to 2 pixels or less, depending on the angle of the brush stroke and results in a much crisper erase line and overall appearance. It also enables you to be a bit more accurate with your eraser and get tighter lines.
