When Photoshop’s Eraser is too soft…

compare Grutbrushes sharp eraser vs Photoshop’s default eraser at 100% hardness.

Sometimes Photoshop’s eraser is just too soft, even with hardness set at 100%  The GrutBrushes Sharp Eraser gives you a crisper alternative. At it’s maximum edge hardness, the default Photoshop eraser still leaves quite a soft feathered edge. If you zoom in really closely you will see that it has up to 3 pixels of feathering, that means that from opaque to transparent there is a smooth gradient of 3 pixels. That may not seem like much but it really does make a difference and has the overall effect of creating a soft smudgy fade around anything you erase. Without any feathering at all, your erased lines could  appear too sharp, like pixel art. With the GrutBrushes Sharp Eraser, that gradient edge transition from opaque to transparent is reduced to 2 pixels or less, depending on the angle of the brush stroke and results in a much crisper erase line and overall appearance. It also enables you to be a bit more accurate with your eraser and get tighter lines.

GrutBrushes Brush Stroke Guide Cheat Sheet Now available!

Download cheat sheet for all GrutBrushes Photoshop brushes
The GrutBrushes Photoshop brush stroke guide is here!

You can now see hand drawn brush strokes representative of every single Photoshop brush by downloading the brush stroke reference guide from the new ‘resources‘ section on GrutBrushes.com  It’s available to download as either a JPG or PDF (It’s a tall image, so be sure to zoom in!) Or view the online version where you can hover over a brush stroke and see it up close with a magnifier window.

There are more guides on the way, including a detailed brush stroke sampler for each brush that shows a standard variety of brush stroke drills. Inspired by the excellent real media brush reviews by  Teoh Yi Chie of Parka Blogs who turns reviewing art supplies into an art form of it’s own.

Of course, the best way to preview the brushes is still to click the play icon on each brush in the shop and watch it drawing ‘live’ in front of your eyes. But I hope the one page catalogs will be a useful visual references when you are looking through your list of GrutBrushes or just need some inspiration.

This week’s free brush is a grainy watercolor brush that has a lot of splattery texture when applied with repeated short strokes. Lift your stylus between each stroke to maintain maximum speckling or maintain contact to clean up the stray ink spots a little.
